Rodale Institute will be joining farmers across the country in celebrating this year’s CSA Day! According to the CSA Farming Report, the last Friday in February is the most popular day to sign up for a CSA farm share. Join us this Friday, February 24, by signing up for an organic CSA farm share with Rodale Institute.
Since 2012, Rodale Institute’s Agriculture Supported Communities (ASC) farm share program has been providing low-income communities with access to locally sourced, fresh, organic produce and foods. Rodale Institute's ASC program provides members with weekly organic produce that can be picked up at local community sites. Our unique ASC farm share model allows members to pay week-to-week with different payment options including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Thanks to a partnership with Kremmer’s Café and Catering we are able to partially subsidize shares for families in need.
Unlike most CSAs, Rodale Institute's ASC program not only offers a weekly payment plan and the use of SNAP, but also engages in community work and training new organic farmers. Last year, the ASC program helped 120 Head Start preschool children in Reading and Allentown, PA start school gardens, giving them the opportunity to sample the food they grew. Along with introducing this lifestyle to these children, the Head Start facilities is also a pick up location for ASC members.
By becoming an ASC member, your dollar will contribute to the important work Rodale Institute has been doing for over 70 years, including research and training new organic farmers. ASC interns commit four to eight months to the program, immersing themselves in both hands-on and classroom training in organic farming skills, sustainable ideologies, and business planning. Over the past years, Rodale Institute has graduated over 20 new farmers from the ASC intern program.
Along with a weekly vegetable share, ASC members also have the option to order organic eggs, flowers, apples, and apple cider grown and raised seasonally at Rodale Institute. New to this growing season is our optional meat share! ASC members can now pair their vegetable shares with a meat share comprised of organically and humanely raised, pastured pork from our 333-acre certified organic farm.
