Organic Allentown

Changing a city, one vegetable at a time

OrganicAllentown

Rodale Institute piloted the Agriculture Supported Communities (ASC) program in 2012 as an innovative first step in increasing regional accessibility to affordable, locally- grown organic food.  In 2014, the seed of this idea blossomed into the Organic Allentown initiative through which we expanded our ASC distribution sites and developed two of them into multi-vendor organic farmers’ markets with the assistance of a USDA Farmers’ Market Promotion Program Grant.

Although the funding stream for Organic Allentown concluded at the end of 2016, Rodale Institute is continuing the commitment of providing access to fresh affordable food to underserved communities in Allentown through the ASC program and by offering additional organic produce, eggs and meat products at Allentown farm stands at Sacred Heart Hospital and the Allentown YMCA/YWCA in 2017.  We also welcome other organic or transitioning-to-organic vendors to participate in this community outreach program throughout the season.
