Rodale is offering an educational and hands-on opportunity for individuals to assist in all aspects of our organic farm program at the Founders Farm campus. Individuals should be driven, hardworking, and committed to organic agriculture practices. All candidates must be prepared to work in a professional environment, complete tasks carefully and in a timely manner, and be willing to work in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities could include:

  • Watering and maintenance of indoor plants, potted plants and cold frames
  • Establishment of vegetable and ornamental beds and planting of transplants
  • Ongoing plant-care including: pruning, dead-heading, watering, mulching, and weeding, weeding, weeding
  • Preparation and application of organic fertilizers
  • Field work (planting, harvesting, etc.)
  • Weed and pest management
  • Irrigation
  • Harvest and package vegetables, herbs, and flowers for distribution
  • Stocking/set up of farm stand
  • Maintain organic and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) records
  • Assist other departments as needed
  • Maintain, organize, and clean farm equipment and storage areas

Candidate qualifications:

  • Previous farming experience is preferred
  • Interest in agriculture, landscaping, and farming, with a commitment to an organic planet
  • Incredibly organized, attentive to detail, ability to work independently, multi-task and be a team player
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge and experience using string trimmer, leaf blower, backpack sprayer, drip irrigation systems, and garden tools preferred
  • Ability to follow directions, problem solving skills and common sense preferred
  • Must be prompt, responsible and focused
  • Must be able to move freely around the farm, have the ability and willingness to operate machinery

Additional information:

Location: Rodale Institute Founders Farm, 2056 Minesite Road, Allentown, PA

Schedule: Seasonal full-time, 40hr/week for 25 weeks
