DESCRIPTION:Rodale Institute will host an Organic Hazelnut Field Day on November 24 at our Pacific Northwest Organic Center. \nThe event will cover topics such as organic pest management\, fertility\, harvesting\, and value-added processes. Farmers and the public are invited to participate in the field walk (weather permitting)\, discussions\, and presentations by experts. \nThis field day will also highlight our ongoing organic hazelnut agroforestry research\, supported by the Edwards Mother Earth Foundation and the Northwest Community Foundation. We have established an orchard with European cultivars (Jefferson\, Yamhill\, Dorris\, Theta) and a native hazelnut species (Corylus cornuta). The project evaluates their performance under organic management and alleycropping systems to improve soil health and system resilience in the Pacific Northwest. Join Rick Carr\, Senior Farm Director\, at the PNWOC for an overview of on-farm compost production. Learn about solid waste management\, composting logistics\, economics\, feedstock management\, compost utilization and benefits\, as well as the physical\, biological\, and chemical characteristics of finished compost. The program’s research projects focus on establishing best practices to facilitate the adoption\, installation\, and continued management of alternative orchard production systems in each of Rodale’s target regions. This session will cover the fundamentals of perennial crops and highlight opportunities for growers to incorporate these climate-smart agroforestry techniques. \nRodale Institute Research Priorities and Current Projects – Andrew Smith\, Ph.D.\, Chief Scientific Officer \nDr. Andrew Smith\, Chief Scientific Officer at Rodale Institute\, will provide a brief update of Rodale’s research priorities and current research projects. This will include updates on the long-term Farming Systems Trial\, Vegetable Systems Trial\, nutrient density testing\, organic reduced tillage systems\, and some of the research at other research locations around the country. \nRegenerative Healthcare: Connecting Soil Health to Gut Health – Dr. Arti Chandra\, Functional and Integrative Medicine Family Physician \nAs a functional medicine family physician\, Dr Chandra will discuss her approaches of seeking root causes of people’s health issues and working from there through lifestyle approaches\, nutraceutical and mind-body approaches to help reduce symptoms and the burden of disease processes and restore optimal wellness and vitality.   She will present on the primary root cause of our chemical agricultural system on contributing to most chronic disease processes and teach about soil health principles for human health and planetary health \nNew Parasitoids of Spotted Wing Drosophila in Washington – Ben Diehl\, WSU NWREC Entomology Technician \nSince spotted wing drosophila first invaded Washington State in 2009\, it quickly became the top pest of blueberries and raspberries. Until recently\, natural enemies of this pest provided marginal economic control. Luckily\, two parasitoid wasps that specialize in attacking spotting wing drosophila were discovered in Washington State around 2020. Ben Diehl will discuss the parasitoids biology\, WSU monitoring efforts\, current distribution\, and potential for improving management of spotted wing drosophila. \nPotential Organic Management Tools for Spotted Wing Drosophila and Blueberry Aphids – Claire Winslow\, WSU NWREC Entomology Master Student \nClaire Winslow will discuss her planned research projects testing two organic products\, Decoy and Surround\, for suppressing spotted wing drosophila and blueberry aphids\, respectively. Decoy is a highly attractive food grade gum that causes spotted wing drosophila to lay more eggs in the product than in surround fruit\, reducing overall crop injury. Surround (kaolin clay) can repel many pest insects\, including aphids\, from crops. We will test the potential for Surround\, applied as either a post-harvest or pre-bloom spray\, to disrupt aphid colonization while avoiding residues on fruit. \nA Long-Term Investment in Agricultural Sustainability: Updates on the Washington Soil Health Initiative – Gabe LaHue\, Assistant Professor WSU \nThe Washington State Legislature made a substantial investment in soil health with the Washington Soil Health Initiative\, a multi-pronged approach that seeks to create a soil health roadmap\, develop a baseline assessment of soil health across the state\, understand the long-term impacts of management practices on soil health and farm profitability in key regional systems\, and provide funding and technical assistance for the implementation of management practices to build soil health. Come learn about the status of each of these efforts\, with a focus on the Mount Vernon Long-Term Agroecological Research and Extension site that was initiated in 2021. \nBalancing Act: Impact of Pollinator Habitat on Pests in Blueberry Systems – Emma Rogers\, Research Technician\, WSU \nThis collaboration with Pollinator Partnership explores pest and beneficial insect communities in the semi-natural habitats surrounding blueberry fields. The aim of this trial is to understand the dynamics of pest pressure\, specifically aphids and spotted wing drosophila in the Pacific Northwest\, in environments adjacent to fields that support wild pollinators\, as well as the impact on beneficial insect populations.
