SUMMARY:Webinar: Markets ROI of Organic Transition for Dairy Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Are you considering the transition to organic farming for your dairy farm and or interested in improving the return on investment for your organic farm through markets? Join us for an insightful virtual webinar designed to help you understand the economic potential of organic markets and equip you with the tools to evaluate your own transition. Attendees will get an overview of the organic market landscape and its growth potential from economic experts and learn from farmers like Wilson Organic Farms and the Painterland Sisters who successfully transitioned to organic dairy production. \nAll sessions are free of charge to attendees. \nPanelists\nPanelist: Chris Wilson\nChris Wilson is a seventh-generation farmer at Wilson Organic Farms in Cuba City\, Wisconsin\, where he and his family have been farming organically since 1996. With decades of experience in organic dairy and diversified cropping systems\, Chris’s family has been at the forefront of integrating organic no-till\, rotational grazing\, and cover cropping to build resilient farm ecosystems. Beyond the farm\, Chris serves on the Meat Executive Committee for CROPP Cooperative (Organic Valley) and actively collaborates with research institutions to advance regenerative agricultural solutions. His work bridges practical on-farm management with broader industry efforts to improve soil health\, nutrient efficiency\, and livestock integration within organic systems.\n \n \nPanelist: Painterland Sisters \nSisters Stephanie and Hayley Painter\, Founders and co-CEOs of Painterland Sisters\, grew up on their family’s fourth-generation regenerative organic dairy farm in Northern Pennsylvania. Using milk from their own farm and neighboring family farms\, they’re on a mission to sustain family farms\, champion nutrient-dense foods\, and educate consumers on the importance of sustainable farming—while connecting them directly to the source: the American Farmer. \nSince launching in 2022\, they were named Forbes 30 Under 30 in Food & Drink\, honored on the Congress Floor\, won a Nexty Award for their 24 oz Plain yogurt\, and spoke at over 60 events\, proudly representing Pennsylvania agriculture and amplifying the voices of farmers worldwide.\n \n \nModerator: Taylor Ussery \nTaylor Ussery helped run a small producer-processor dairy in central North Carolina for over seven years. During this time\, she created new gelato and soft serve product lines that were sold into direct-to-consumer\, retail\, and foodservice markets. She now works for a national foodservice distribution company where she helps farmers and artisans understand and access larger institutional markets. Taylor still engages her passion for dairy by sourcing local milk for her soft serve ice cream catering company and eating copious amounts of local cheese and fluid whole milk.\n \n \n  \n\nRegistration\n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Marketing Your Organic Grains
DESCRIPTION:Join us! This 60-minute Market Development Workshop session at the Mid-Atlantic Grain Conference hosted by the Common Grain Alliance will feature subject matter experts focused on organic grain markets.\nThis panel will be moderated by Kyle Pletcher from Tuscarora Grain Company and will feature economic expert\, Kellee James\, farmer and miller\, Scott Morgan and Michael Chapman\, an organic buyer and founder of Fieldcraft. A mixer will immediately follow the discussion to allow producers and organic buyers to network and make meaningful connections. Light snacks will be provided. This event provides an opportunity for organic producers\, those transitioning\, and those who are curious about organic production to gather and learn more about organic market grain opportunities. Panelists\nKyle Pletcher is the Organic Grain Merchandiser at Tuscarora Grain Company (TGC). TGC was founded in 2020 and was built on the belief that creative thinking opens doors to distinct opportunities in the grain commodities industry. TGC offers a dynamic range of services designed to supply the Eastern US organic feed industry. They strive to connect organic growers with their intended end use markets through their wide-ranging customer base consisting of small-scale and large-scale feed mills and food grade processors. TGC has a deep connection to the soil and land and understand what it takes to be a top organic producer. They sit at the heart of the eastern US organic feed industry\, and they maintain strategic relationships across the country. TGC has a solid grower network throughout the U.S. and when you pair that with their own company-owned rail transportation facility\, TGC is one of the few US=based organic farm-to-feed and farm-to-fork ingredient supply chains in the organic grain industry. \nMichael Chapman is the Co-Founder and CEO of Fieldcraft\, an online marketplace for specialty grains and ingredients. Fieldcraft is built exclusively for food and beverage production. Fieldcraft partners with thousands of buyers ranging from brands and manufacturers to commercial and craft bakers\, brewers and distillers. The platform simplifies the discovery and sourcing process for buyers and enables marketing opportunities for commodity and value-added growers from spot to specialty production contracts. Fieldcraft is building a new supply chain\, connecting markets and empowering agribusinesses that are promoting biodiversity and pioneering new markets. Michael was born and raised in a farming community in the Central Valley of CA. He is an Army veteran\, led special operations teams in the CIA\, served in several locations as CIA Chief of Base and later in the White House Situation Room. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and practiced contract law for several years. He has traveled across all seven continents and nearly 100 countries and was inspired by the link between sustainability and agriculture. To him\, the goal of sustainable agriculture is simple — to make it better than we found it. That is the mission of Fieldcraft. \nScott Morgan from Morganics Family Farm started his farming career at the turn of the century as a farm hand growing mixed vegetables on a five-acre farm in Sarasota\, Florida. Scott went on to manage a crew growing baby leaf salad greens on a 250-acre farm in central Florida. After meeting the love of his life\, his wife Alison and starting his family\, Scott and his family moved to New Jersey. He spent another 10 years growing specialty organic crops in central New Jersey. In 2017\, Alison\, Scott and their three kids started Morganics Family Farm. Morganics is focused on growing and milling organic and truly sustainable grains. They grow what they can in their ground and partner with other regional growers. They mill flour and oatmeal to bring the amazing flavors and nutritional benefits of fresh grains to the public. At Morganics\, they are always on the grind! \nKellee James founded Mercaris\, a market data and information platform for organic commodity markets almost 15 years ago. SUMMARY:Webinar: Buyer Perspectives on Organic Vegetable Sourcing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging follow-up to the previous webinar\, “Markets ROI of Organic Transition for Vegetable Farmers\,” where we dive deeper into the perspectives of buyers in the organic vegetable market.\nAttendees will gather insights from multiple buyers across the U.S. on their sourcing needs\, learn about key factors that influence buyer decisions\, and learn how to build strong\, collaborative relationships with buyers. This conversation is designed specifically for farmers looking to understand the current landscape and future opportunities in organic vegetable markets. \nThe panel will be moderated by David Paysnick and will feature Whitney Herrera\, Kenny Meyer and Alex Borst. \nAll sessions are free of charge to attendees. \nPanelists:\nDavid Paysnick: David is the Food Hub Business Development Manager at Food Connects\, a 501c3 non-profit based in Southern Vermont. He joined Food Connects in 2020 with 25+ years of experience in food and farming-related occupations and has helped the Food Connects Food Hub grow annual sales from $1.1 Million in 2020 to $3.9 million ins 2024. Prior to working at Food Connects\, David operated Rainbow Harvest Farm in Greenfield\, MA\, producing organic vegetables\, herbs\, nursery plants\, fig trees and specialty food products. He was the founding farmer at the non-profit Greenfield Community Farm\, where he led the farm through its initial years of development and production. David also spent nearly a decade working in retail food co-ops in both California and Massachusetts\, primarily as Produce Manager and Buyer\, as well as serving as Board President for a multi-store Food Co-op in Western Massachusetts. In his earlier days\, he also worked as a wholesale baker\, chef\, and held several other restaurants\, farm and food positions. SUMMARY:Southeast Organic Buyer/Seller Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Organic Buyer/Seller Mixer and Farmer Champion Award Ceremony with Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture\nAt Georgia Organics’ SOWTH Conference\nTake part in this mixer focused on fostering relationships between farmers and organic buyers. Farmers and organic buyers will have the chance to connect through some facilitated conversations about organic markets opportunities\, particularly for organic vegetable and fruit markets. Refreshments and food will be provided. This event is especially designed for organic buyers\, organic farmers\, those transitioning\, and those who are curious about organic production. \nIn addition to networking\, Tyler Harper\, Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture will present the Farmer Champion awards for Higher Education and Early Care and Education. The Farmer Champion program works with The Common Market Southeast and Quality Care for Children to verify local food purchases for higher education institutions and early care and education centers\, respectively. Georgia Organics and the Common Market Southeast work together on expanding local food in higher education institutions through The ACRE Collective: Advancing Agriculture\, Community\, Resilience & Equity through Values-Based Procurement. The ACRE Collective centers on garnering food purchasing commitments from Atlanta-area anchor institutions\, while shifting procurement to producers that share these institutions’ values. Georgia Organics and Quality Care for Children have awarded approximately twenty early care and education centers across the state since expanding the Farmer Champion program in 2022. We are excited to honor four higher education institutions in the Atlanta-area and seven early care and education centers across Georgia that are committed to sourcing local food and working with growers across Georgia. \n\nLearn More About the Farmer Champion Program: The Farmer Champion Program at Georgia Organics was launched in 2019 and works to bring local farmers and the food service community together to increase sustainable and organic purchasing. This happens by connecting eaters to businesses that source responsibly\, so our local food system’s diverse patchwork of small and organic farms will grow and thrive. The Farmer Champion program helps to raise awareness about local sourcing by highlighting various members of the food service community who prioritize sourcing local food and relationships with Georgia’s vibrant community of food producers.  These relationships between farmers\, food producers\, and the food service community help to continue to grow and strengthen Georgia’s good resilient food system. \nPlease note: Although this event is associated with SOWTH\, you do not have to be an attendee of SOWTH to attend this event. However\, if you are planning on attending SOWTH\, you should definitely come and help us kick off a great regional conference! \nAgenda\n\n6-6:45pm – Arrival\, informal networking\, refreshments\n6:45-7:15pm – Welcome and Farmer Champion Award Ceremony with Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture\, Tayler Harper\n7:15-9pm – Facilitated networking\n\nDetails\nLocation: Wild Heaven Beer: West End Brewery & Gardens\n1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nDate: February 4\, 2025 \nTime: 6pm – 9pm EST \nRegistration\n\n \n \n FacebookThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Address* \n \n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n Farm or Organization NameI am a...*\n \n \n Farmer/Producer\n \n \n \n Processor/Handler\n \n \n \n Buyer (ex. restaurant\, wholesale\, hospital\, institution\, etc)\n \n \n \n \n If you need an accessibility accommodation or have any other information you’d like us to know\, please provide it below:Photo Release*I hereby consent to the royalty-free use by the Organic Trade Association\, Rodale Institute\, and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of photograph(s) taken of me by employees/representatives of the USDA\, and of any reproduction of the photograph(s) in any form\, in any media\, for any purpose in connection with USDA\, world-wide\, free and clear of any claim whatsoever on my part. SUMMARY:Webinar: Transforming Strawberry and Artichoke Systems: High-Residue Cover Cropping Innovations from the Specialty Crop Grant 2021
DESCRIPTION:Cover cropping systems hold significant promise for enhancing the sustainability of perennial vegetable production. This project explored the use of diverse cover crop species\, including sorghum\, clovers\, buckwheat\, and other species\, as part of an intercropping and high-residue system in strawberry and artichoke production. The study aimed to evaluate the long-term weed suppression potential of these cover crops while maintaining productivity in these perennial systems. By integrating high-residue cover crops\, the research investigated the dynamics of weed control over time\, soil health benefits\, and potential trade-offs with crop yields. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how diversified cover crop systems can support more sustainable\, resilient\, and economically viable approaches for specialty crop production. \n\n \n \n PhoneThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute.
