SUMMARY:Finding Edible Options for Cover Crops in California Organic Vegetable Rotations
DESCRIPTION:In California (in addition to many other parts of the country) high costs associated with farming can dissuade organic growers from incorporating cover crops and reduced tillage practices to their operation. Since 2024 the team at the Rodale Institute California Organic Center has been exploring how cover crops that can be harvested may offset some of the costs while improving the conditions of the soil and pressure from weeds. \nRegistration\n\n\n \n \n PhoneThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Advancing Sustainable Hemp Fiber Production and Processing in the Northeastern U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Rodale Institute has been at the forefront of industrial hemp research\, developing the best management practices to support farmers and fiber-processing industries across Pennsylvania and the Northeastern region since 2017.\nOur field and greenhouse trials focus on nutrient management\, varietal performance\, and key agronomic practices\, including row spacing and the use of cover crops to suppress weeds and improve soil health. We have evaluated many fiber hemp varieties with a special focus on their adaptability to organic systems. \nIn addition to agronomic performance\, we have studied how these varieties interact with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)\, beneficial microbes that enhance nutrient uptake and contribute to overall plant resilience. We have also begun testing the mechanical properties of fiber samples\, including tensile strength\, to better understand their industrial potential. \nWe look forward to sharing these findings to empower more growers and processors with practical\, science-based solutions\, in building a sustainable hemp fiber economy in the Northeast. Gain insights from our presenter\, Dr. Dinesh Panday in this webinar on September 3\, 2025. \nRegistration\n\n \n \n LinkedInThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Electric Livestock Fencing—from Poultry to Cattle
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar led by our Farm Innovations team\, we will focus on designing\, installing\, and using a variety of styles of portable and semi portable electric fences.\nWe will begin by looking at maps as a tool for planning your fence outline. We will then look at the variety of fences available to suit the needs of your operation. We will cover poultry netting\, 4-5 strand fencing for goats and sheep\, 1-2 strand fencing suitable for larger animals\, perimeter fencing\, subdividing paddocks within your field\, 3-D anti deer fencing\, grounding\, and energizers. We will discuss how to move livestock within fencing and some of the successes and failures we have had here at the Midwest Organic Center as well as in my past career working on a diverse organic farm in Northern California. Finally\, we will examine the age-old adage “the best fence is a good pasture.” \nRegistration\n\n \n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute.
