DESCRIPTION:Tomatoes are the crown jewel of the farming season\, but can be difficult to deal with year after year\, especially if they are grown in the same location\, like a high tunnel or small garden. This workshop combines classroom lecture and hands-on demonstration to teach the essentials of grafting\, which can improve yields and overall plant health. \nLearn the science behind grafting and best practices for high tunnel production of grafted and non-grafted tomato plants. You’ll go home with two grafted tomato plants\, a copy of the presentation\, and instructions on how to care for your new charges. \nSpace is limited and pre-registration is required. \nOrganic Farmers Association members receive 25% off all workshops. SUMMARY:Pastured Hogs
DESCRIPTION:The demand for organic and pastured-pork has grown rapidly in recent years. To address this demand\, Rodale Institute is currently conducting research and educational outreach for farmers interested in including organic\, heritage pastured pork into their farm operation. This project was started as a tool for setting the standard for best practices in raising hogs. \nA pasture-based production system is a very cost-effective method of meat production and is appealing to consumers who look for high-quality meat from humanely-treated animals. Grazing hogs on pasture not only benefits the animals but also improves the overall farm\, as hogs will clean up weather-damaged crops and weed species\, fertilize pastures/fields with manure\, and can even be used to “till up” underproductive areas. Ross Duffield\, Rodale Institute’s farm manager\, will discuss pasture rotations and animal management. The class is an opportunity for interested farmers to learn first-hand how to integrate a pastured hog operation into their farm. Focused on nutrition and forage management\, serious farmers will gain the knowledge they need to begin setting the foundations of a successful organic hog herd. \nTuition: $60/person. DESCRIPTION:Families and kids of all ages are invited to trick-or-treat in costume at the Garden Store\, enjoy a farm-wide Halloween-themed scavenger hunt\, partake in a fun fall craft activity in the comfort of our theater (or outdoors\, if weather permits)\, and take home an organically grown pumpkin\, perfect for painting or carving. \nPlease note that this is a rain-or-shine event. Registration for this event is $8/family.

SUMMARY:Healing Through Nature Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Farm yoga\, anyone? Rodale Institute is pairing up with yoga instructor Elizabeth Kawa to offer a yoga event designed to soothe mind\, body\, and soul and promote healing through nature. This session will start with a 60-minute beginner yoga class followed by a light refreshment and discussion. The group will then spend some time in quiet contemplation while participating in seasonal volunteer work and taking a peaceful stroll of the farm. Lastly\, participants will wind down with a 30-minute meditation and sound healing session. \nParticipants should bring a yoga mat\, appropriate shoes for work on the farm\, and a reusable drinking container. \nPlease note that this is a rain-or-shine event that will take place outside in ideal weather or light rain; in case of hard rain\, the event will be held in Rodale Institute’s theater\, located next to the Garden Store. \nAttendance limit: 40 people \nCost: There is no fee for attending this event\, but Rodale Institute welcomes donations. Contributions toward this season’s classes will help fund Rodale Institute’s Honeybee Conservancy\, which is dedicated to researching colony collapse disorder and finding ways to aid the health and well-being of honeybees\, so vital to the nation’s food supply.
