DESCRIPTION:Watch A Recording of This Webinar \nFood\, Farming and Philadelphia – The Impact of Organic Agriculture on Human and Environmental Health in the City of Brotherly Love\nJoin us for a panel discussion that brings together voices in the Philadelphia area around the impact agriculture has on our health and the health of the environment around us. This is part of our Grow Clean Water initiative aimed at educating young families in the Philadelphia region about the connection between farming practices and healthy waterways. \nIn addition to learning about farming practices\, urban gardening initiatives\, and how restaurants source their food\, our panelists will discuss the important role we all play as informed and value-driven consumers. How can we make a personal impact on the food system through our purchases? How do those decisions impact the environment and our communities? \nThe conversation will be moderated by Julie Hancher of Green Philly. Panelists include Christa Barfield of FarmerJawn Community Greenhouses\, Justin Trezza of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society\, Carly Pourzand of The People’s Kitchen\, and Emily Newman of Rodale Institute’s Organic Crop Consulting Program. Christa Barfield is a healthcare professional-turned-farmer\, a 33-year-old mother of two and a lifelong Germantown resident. 10 years into her career in healthcare\, she resigned from her job and determined to take back her life\, health\, and happiness\, not only for herself but for her family as well. After a solo trip to Martinique in January 2018\, she returned home inspired to connect with the land\, plant life\, and social issues that heavily impact black and brown communities. Since 2018\, she has developed earth-born brands owned by her parent company\, LifeLeaf Organic Farms. Her original two ventures\, Viva Leaf Tea Co. and FarmerJawn Community Supported Agriculture are based in regenerative agricultural values with a goal of traceable and transparent origins of 100% Organically Dope foods. Christa has also begun expanding her hemp farming knowledge with the goals of destigmatizing cannabis and impacting regulation related to unfair incarceration surrounding the plant. \n \nJulie Hancher is cofounder & editor of Green Philly\, a local media company that makes sustainable living easy\, accessible and lost cost to the region through its website and events. Since 2008\, Green Philly is the region’s top source for sustainability news\, tips\, inspiration and career advice. In 2016\, Hancher created SustainPHL\, Philadelphia’s annual sustainability awards and celebrations. Julie is a frequent speaker and sustainability expert\, and has appeared on WHYY Radio Times\, Philly Weekly\, Travel & Leisure and more. When she’s not behind a computer\, you can find Julie hiking\, biking or traveling. \n \nEmily Newman is Rodale Institute’s Organic Crop Consulting Program Manager. She joined the consulting team in January 2020 and helps farmers navigate organic compliance as they transition to certified organic. Emily holds a B.S. in Environmental Resource Management\, focused in Soil Science\, from Pennsylvania State University and is currently pursuing an M.B.A. in Food and Agribusiness from Delaware Valley University. Prior to joining the team at Rodale Institute\, she worked in regulatory compliance of organics for a certification agency and a materials review organization. She is IOIA trained\, a Certified Crop Advisor and serves as a board member for the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). \nCarly Pourzand is the People’s Kitchen Organizing Director at 215 People’s Alliance\, a multi-racial collaborative fighting for equity and justice in Philadelphia. Since the onset of COVID-19\, she has worked alongside other community members\, chefs\, organizers\, and restaurant workers to shape the People’s Kitchen into a people-powered project that is reimagining the food system. Carly’s organizing and advocacy experience has spanned the fields of education\, immigration\, racial\, economic\, environmental\, and food justice. Throughout her advocacy and community discussion facilitation\, she has worked with hospital workers\, undocumented leaders\, and people impacted by opioids and policing. Most recently\, Carly spearheaded the collaboration between the People’s Kitchen and the Growing Together Garden\, based on her years-long relationship with a congregation in one of the most violently gentrified neighborhoods in South Philly. This Community Farm is now a cornerstone in the People’s Kitchen and 215 PA’s work. \nJustin Trezza joined Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as its Director of Community Gardens Program in 2017 after having worked with several agroecological and grassroots organizations. Justin works closely with his team\, which includes the City Harvest initiative\, to support community and cooperative gardens throughout Philadelphia for a successful growing season. Justin received his B.A. in International Affairs and Socio-cultural Anthropology from the George Washington University and received his Nonprofit Executive Leadership Certificate through Bryn Mawr College. Justin has spent the last 15 years focusing on equitable and sustainable food systems locally and internationally with a focus on Central America. Prior to PHS\, Justin served as the Executive Director of Norris Square Neighborhood Project and as Program Director for Sustainable Harvest International. Justin is passionate about food sovereignty\, bikes\, and punk and experimental music. He lives in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia with his wife\, their two kids\, and very energetic labradoodle. He also serves on the board of director for the Mt. Airy CDC.

Equipped with a business degree from the University of Minnesota\, Marshall strives to bring conservation into the 21st century\, creating eco-friendly profit centers and urban habitat initiatives driven by the ecosystem services they provide to communities. Marshall’s pioneering work in the Dakotas brings farmers\, ranchers\, retailers and consumers together with grasslands\, herds and birds into win-win alignment. The groundbreaking market-based Conservation Ranching Program now enrolls more than 2\,300\,000 acres across 96 ranches. \nTom Newmark is the co-founder and board chair of The Carbon Underground\, co-founder of the Soil Carbon Initiative\, past board chair of the Greenpeace Fund USA\, and a founding member of the Leadership Council of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture and Resilient Systems at California State University-Chico. He is the co-owner of Finca Luna Nueva Lodge\, a farm and ecolodge in the mountainous rainforest of Costa Rica that teaches regenerative agriculture. He is a strategic advisor to Maharishi International University’s Sustainable and Regenerative Living Department\, past board chair of the America Botanical Council\, and publisher of the peer-reviewed journal HerbalGram. \nChellie Pingree is a U.S. Congresswoman for Maine’s 1st District. She became an organic farmer on the small island of North Haven\, ME\, in the 1970’s and owns Turner Farm\, a diversified organic farm that provides produce\, meat\, and cheese to restaurants and local customers. In Congress\, Chellie relies on her experience as a certified organic farmer to support the diverse range of American agriculture\, including sustainable\, organic\, and locally focused farming. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture\, she has been a vocal advocate for food policy reform. Because of her leadership\, the 2018 Farm Bill more than doubled funding for organic research\, created the first federal produce prescription program\, and established the first federal local food program with permanent funding. Pingree is also the founder and chair of the Food Recovery Caucus. \nDr. Andrew Smith is responsible for farm operations and research activities at the Rodale Institute main campus\, along with six other production and research campuses. Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy at Cornell University\, a Master of Science in entomology at the University of Maryland\, and his Ph.D. in environmental science from Drexel University. Dr. Smith spent two years in the Peace Corps assisting a cooperative of small-scale vegetable farmers in Guatemala and joined the Rodale Institute team in 2015. Dr. Smith owns a 140-acre organic farm with his wife where they raise Shetland sheep\, grow fiber and fruit crops\, and manage a Seed-to-Share garden and provide educational programming. \nAlex Pryor is co-founder and board member of Guayaki Yerba Mate SPC. Born and raised in Argentina\, Alex witnessed firsthand the causes and consequences of deforestation. He has 25 years of experience with indigenous ancestral knowledge\, international business\, food science and natural resource management in agroecology. Alex currently promotes life-regenerating businesses models\, such as Guayaki\, that value the ecosystem\, as well as economic and cultural interdependence on a local\, regional and global level. Alex serves as chairman of the board at The Guayaki Foundation\, and the Fundacion Agroecologica Iguazu in Argentina. Alex has been married for over 22 years and is a father of five.

Hayes\, Ph.D.\nDr. Tyrone B. Hayes received his Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1989 and his Ph.D. from the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California\, Berkeley in 1993. After completing his Ph.D.\, he was hired as an Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley in 1994\, promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2000\, and to full Professor in 2003. Hayes’ research focuses on developmental endocrinology with an emphasis on the role of endocrine-disrupting contaminants\, particularly pesticides. He is interested in the impact of chemical contaminants on environmental health and public health\, with specific attention to environmental justice and healthcare disparities. \nKatherine DiMatteo\nKatherine DiMatteo provides organizational management\, and policy and regulatory consulting services to the organic sector.. She recently served as interim executive director of Pennsylvania Certified Organic and was formerly the executive director of the Organic Trade Association from 1990 to 2006. Katherine was instrumental in shaping the outcome of the U.S. National Organic Program standards and the U.N. Codex Guidelines for organically produced foods. She currently serves on the Fairtrade America Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of Protect Our Breasts. Katherine was a founding member of the Climate Collaborative and now serves on its management board. Previously she served as the president of IFOAM-Organics International Board of Directors and was a founding member of The Organic Center’s Board of Directors. \nThe Lundberg Family\nLundberg Family Farms leads with a longer view of family\, food\, and organic farming. Albert\, Frances\, and their four sons—Eldon\, Wendell\, Harlan\, and Homer—saw how the Dust Bowl stripped the land of its topsoil in the 1930’s. When they moved to California\, they decided to work in partnership with nature\, becoming pioneers of organic farming. Since 1937\, the Lundbergs have been growing healthy\, great-tasting rice while tending to soil\, air\, water\, and wildlife as carefully as their crops. He has served on the Whole Foods Scientific and Medical Advisory Board\, appeared in documentaries and on national shows\, and hosted a 2018 PBS special. Dr. Stoll is also a published author of numerous works including Your Next Bite\, Alive!\, and many scientific articles. \nZach Bush\, M.D.\nDr. Zach Bush is a physician specializing in internal medicine\, endocrinology and hospice care. He is an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health\, disease\, and food systems. Dr. Bush founded Seraphic Group and the non-profit Farmer’s Footprint to develop root-cause solutions for human and ecological health. His education has highlighted the need for a radical departure from chemical farming and pharmacy\, and his ongoing efforts are providing a path for consumers\, farmers\, and mega-industries to work together for a healthy future for people and planet. \n \nRon Weiss\, M.D.\nDr. Ron Weiss is a physician and farmer. He is founder of Ethos Health\, a farm-based healthcare system.  At the center of this system is Ethos Farm\, a 280-year old working farm in Long Valley\, NJ that regeneratively grows produce to be used as part of an evidence-based diet of whole plant foods to reverse and prevent chronic disease. Dr. Weiss is a diplomate of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. He is also Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. If he’s not planting\, you can find him practicing and teaching lifestyle medicine in an old wooden farmhouse right in the middle of the growing fields. \nMeagan L. Grega\, M.D.\nMeagan L. Grega\, MD\, is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Kellyn Foundation\, a 501(c)3 non-profit that encourages family and community physical and emotional wellness. After earning her B.S. in Biochemistry/Cell Biology at Bucknell University\, and her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School\, Dr. Grega spent time as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy\, as a staff Family Physician at Hunterdon Medical Center\, and as Director of Women’s Health Services at Lafayette College. She is currently the Managing Director of Llantrisant Retreat and Wellness Center\, adjunct faculty at St. Luke’s University Health Network\, and a faculty advisor for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. Dr. Grega has had a long-standing interest in child and family health; she focuses on the obesity epidemic in particular. She is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. \n \nDr. Andrew Smith\nDr. Andrew Smith is responsible for administrating\, facilitating and implementing research activities as well as leading and expanding the Research team’s impact on a global stage. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy at Cornell University and a Master of Science in entomology at the University of Maryland. After two years in the Peace Corp assisting a cooperative of small-scale vegetable farmers in Guatemala and ten years farming organically in Pennsylvania\, Smith attended Drexel University in Philadelphia\, where he earned his Ph.D. in environmental science with a concentration in molecular and population ecology. Smith formerly held the position of Research Director for the Vegetable Systems Trial. \nJeff Tkach\nAs Chief Impact Officer of Rodale Institute\, Jeff leads the development and execution of the Institute’s core strategies\, expanding Rodale Institute’s global influence in healing people and the planet. In 2016\, he also served on the Board of Directors. Previously\, Jeff has held leadership positions at Rodale’s Organic Life and Prevention Magazines\, Life Time Fitness\, and Active Interest Media. He is a graduate of Kutztown University and regularly speaks at various industry organizations on behalf of Rodale Institute.
