SUMMARY:Saticoy Sowers Workshop Series - Growing with Intention: Certification\, Crop Planning\, & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:From farm to market and everything in between — Saticoy Sowers is a workshop series designed to help farmers build resilient farms and thriving businesses. Eight workshops\, real skills\, and a community of growers to learn alongside. \n🕓Wednesdays 4–6pm\n🗓️June 3rd through July 22nd\n📍Rodale Institute California Organic Center \nGrowing with Intention: Certification\, Crop Planning\, & Beyond / Cultivar con un objetivo claro: certificación\, planificación de cultivos y mucho más \nRecord-keeping and crop planning are two sides of the same organic compliance coin: your crop plan sets the intention for what you will grow and when\, and your records prove what actually happened from seed to sale. In the first half of this workshop\, we will cover why recordkeeping is required for organic certification\, which records matter most\, practical templates and peak-season habits that make inspections easier. In the second portion\, we will delve into a practical guide to developing the right crop plan for your operation\, examining all factors from finances to season extension. \nDetails\nDate: June 24\, 2026 4-6 PM PST \nLocation:\nRodale Institute California Organic Center\, 1014 W. SUMMARY:Webinar: Can Organic Dairy Meet Science-Based Climate Goals?
DESCRIPTION:The Science-Based Targets Initiative is the leading framework for corporate climate action\, used by over 10\,000 companies globally\, including some of the world’s biggest dairy brands. But the details behind corporate climate plans are rarely shared publicly\, so it can be hard to evaluate the science behind a science-based target. In this webinar\, we use data from a fast-growing organic yogurt company\, Painterland Sisters\, to assess the feasibility of meeting science-based targets for organic dairy. We show that SBTi’s “near term” targets are readily achievable for organic dairy. But SBTi’s “long term” net-zero targets appear to be currently unfeasible. We share some alternative long-term ideas for climate and dairy\, including “fossil fuel free” dairy and separate goals for methane and other greenhouse gases. \nPanelists will include:\nFranklin Egan and Matty Rotman\, Painterland Sisters \nSage Dennis\, Rodale Institute \nRegistration\n\n \n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Saticoy Sowers Workshop Series - From Farm to Sale: Know Your Food System\, Navigate your Market
DESCRIPTION:From farm to market and everything in between — Saticoy Sowers is a workshop series designed to help farmers build resilient farms and thriving businesses. Eight workshops\, real skills\, and a community of growers to learn alongside. \n🕓Wednesdays 4–6pm\n🗓️June 3rd through July 22nd\n📍Rodale Institute California Organic Center \nEvery farm exists within a larger food system — and understanding that system is the first step to finding your place in it. This workshop grounds farmers in how food moves from field to consumer\, then gets practical: comparing sales channels like direct-to-consumer\, wholesale\, and intermediaries\, like food hubs\, and finishing with how to identify your ideal customer and craft a marketing approach that fits your values and operation. \nDetails\nDate: June 3\, 2026 4-6 PM PST \nLocation:\nRodale Institute California Organic Center\, 1014 W. SUMMARY:TOPP Field Walk at Condor Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a field walk at Condor Farms! Condor Farms is a 10-acre\, veteran owner\, diversified farm in Central Maryland\, raising fine wool sheep\, hazelnuts\, and cut-flowers. Owner Sabina grazes 15 sheep across 2.5 acres of pasture and within her 1.5-acre hazelnut orchard. She has planted 104 hazelnut trees (five varieties) and collaborates with Rodale’s Perennial Systems Scientist to track Japanese beetle pressure and identify the most resilient cultivars. Her goals include eventually selling her Maryland-grown\, organic hazelnuts and processing them for a Maryland-grown hazelnut spread. \nSabina also manages three acres as cut flowers and founded the Central Maryland Flower Collective\, a network of specialty cut flower farms that work together to bring locally grown blooms to customers across Maryland and the D.C. region. This cooperative has proven profitable in its first year and serves as a successful example of shared capacity and collaboration. \nNow\, coming into her third season\, Sabina’s farm emphasizes dual-purpose design on limited acreage. Her remaining acres are focused on soil building primarily using cover crops. \nCome learn about the possibilities of on small\, diversified farms! SUMMARY:A Grower-Buyer Panel and Mixer - Where Virginia Farms Meet Their Match
DESCRIPTION:Are you growing vegetables or grains? Growing organically or thinking about making the transition? Ready to scale up or find new market outlets? If you answered yes to any of these\, this is the room you’ve been waiting for. \nOne night to close the gap between what Virginia farms grow and what local buyers need. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to get your vegetables or grain into a distillery\, mill\, grocery store\, or regional supply chain\, bring your questions and come get the answers straight from the source. \nThe evening kicks off with a buyer panel featuring grain buyers from the distillery and milling world alongside diversified vegetable buyers from grocery\, food hubs\, and wholesale. Panelists include Evrim Dogu\, Sub Rosa Bakery; Hannah Russell\, Little House Green Grocery; Michael Sparks\, Underground Kitchen; and Shelley Sackier\, Reservoir Distillery and the Virginia Heritage Grain Project (BOD of Common Grain Alliance). They’ll share what they’re looking for\, what it takes to sell into their operations\, and how to get started. Then the floor opens up\, and the real work begins\, meeting them face to face. \nOur local farms are providing us with the products we need for good food and good drinks\, so come hungry\, come thirsty\, and come ready to talk and connect. \nAll farmers are welcome. Organic focus. Real conversations. No pitch decks are required. \nThe panel tells you what it takes. The mixer is where it happens. \nPresented by Shalom Farms · Virginia Association for Biological Farming · Rodale Institute · Common Grain Alliance \n \nDetails\nDate: Monday\, April 27 · 5:30–8:30 PM \nLocation:\nStudio Two Three\, 109 W 15th St\, Richmond\, VA 23224 \nCost: FREE \nRegistration \n Learn More and Register Today \n \nThank you to Shalom Farms for hosting and co-organizing this event. SUMMARY:Composting 101
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event has been cancelled due to weather. Thank you for understanding\, and we are sorry for the inconvenience.\nEarth Day may have passed\, but the impact continues! Join us for Composting 101 and learn how to reduce waste\, nourish the soil\, and support a more sustainable future! \nManaging a large-scale compost operation requires heavy equipment\, but home gardeners only need a few tools and a little guidance to get started. Join us on Saturday\, April 25 for Composting 101\, our first in-person workshop of the year\, to learn how to turn food scraps and yard waste into a powerful amendment for your growing space. \nThis workshop will be led by Jesse Barrett\, our Farm Operations Specialist. Jesse has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from William Paterson University of New Jersey. Soon after college\, Jesse spent over fifteen years as a high-volume kitchen and farm-to-table\, fine-dining restaurant manager. His experiences as a restaurant manager led him to the realization that there were major flaws in how our food system operates. Passionate to make a change\, Jesse is now a Farm Operations Specialist and looks forward to improving our local and national food system through regenerative organic agriculture. Most recently\, Jesse has been training as a compost production specialist for Rodale Institute. This includes the management of the compost yard and maintaining the compost production in accordance with the National Organic Program standards.
