The Gift Officer is responsible for generating, stewarding, and converting high-capacity donors, foundations, and grant partners in an effort to drive philanthropic revenue and major gifts in support of Rodale Institute. The Gift Officer will be accountable to annual revenue goals set forth by the leadership team. Responsibilities include research and donor insights, establishing meetings, structuring proposals, and cultivating existing and prospective donors. The Gift Officer reports directly to the Vice President of Development. This position is highly goal oriented and will require significant face-to-face meetings and out-of-market travel.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Secure and steward major gifts ranging from $1,000 – + for the organization
  • Manage systems and software (Raiser’s Edge/NXT) to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools
  • Manage existing portfolio of donors and prospects
  • Develop a donor solicitation strategy with help from Development team
  • Work with the development department to align efforts and set goals
  • Make direct, face-to-face solicitations, as well as phone calls, and assist the board and other staff with their solicitation (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications):
    • Conduct a minimum of 75 touches during a month period. These touches can be visits, emails, personal handwritten notes, Zoom calls, or even texts.
    • 15 face-to-face connections per month
    • Visiting with 60% of your portfolio of donors per year
  • Track and report progress using specific metric
  • Oversee operational tasks related to the fundraising process such as database entry, report generation, setting meeting agendas, and planning a monthly and annual work plan towards achieving the Institute’s fundraising goals
  • Utilize to the fullest Raiser’s Edge, fundraising software products including user accounts, contract negotiations, training
  • Assist with the development and management of additional fundraising events, communications, marketing efforts, and development activities
  • Build and sustain open communication between the Development and other Institute departments
  • Assist with special projects as assigned
  • Oversee and execute stewardship with the following giving groups within the Development department: Perennial Partners, JI Leadership, Alumni Network


  • Bachelors in related field and/or combination of equivalent employment and education experience
  • Ability to cultivate, engage and maintain relationships with donors
  • Demonstrate ability to secure individual gifts of $1,000+
  • Minimum of 3 years in fundraising experience
  • Passionate about the mission, core values and goals of Rodale Institute
