SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee Hour: Mid-Large Scale Organic Grain Production in Central Great Plains
DESCRIPTION:The Central Great Plains region is vast and largely rural\, with some communities particularly isolated by their geography. To help foster community building and provide technical assistance to farmers Rodale Institute Consulting Services will host monthly virtual “coffee hours” for 6-months. We believe that the frequency\, open structure\, and small-mid size of the group will be conducive to deep and meaningful conversations.  \nWho should sign up?\nProspective\, transitioning\, or already-certified organic grain farmers in Eastern Colorado\, Western Nebraska\, Western Kansas\, Western Oklahoma. \nWhat can participants expect?\nLéa Vereecke\, organic agronomist based in Colorado\, will facilitate the meetings. Participants will be encouraged to share any questions\, comments or concerns relevant to organic and organic transition on their farm or in general. The facilitator will ensure that conversations remain focused on organic and transition to organic and introduce more topics as they see fit. \nRegistration:\n\n\n \n X/TwitterThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Crop Diversification in the Midwest Improves Soil Health and Farm Profitability
DESCRIPTION:Corn and soybeans are the primary cash crops in the Midwest but this hasn’t always been the case. Millions of acres of small grains were a common sight in the mid-1900’s but this has changed dramatically\, and not for the better. In this webinar\, we will examine how the conventional corn-soybean rotation is detrimental to soil health and limits the farm’s profitability. We will also discuss the Midwest Organic Center’s on-going study that demonstrates the benefits of diversifying crop rotations by integrating small grains\, pulses\, oilseeds\, and livestock\, thus improving the health and sustainability of the farm’s soil and budget. \n\n \n InstagramThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Using UV Light to Manage Pests and Diseases in Organic Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar about the various ways that UV light can be used for pest and disease management in organic agriculture.\nThe first half of the webinar will feature a presentation\, “UV-C for Thrips Management” by a team of researchers from the Entomology Research Lab (ERL) at UVM. \nThe second half of the webinar will focus on the UV light research that Rodale Institute is conducting with powdery mildew disease in organic greenhouse lettuce production. Lettuce growers depend heavily on OMRI certified chemicals to spray against the pathogen that causes the disease. Other technologies may be potentially helpful to nip the disease early in the production system. However\, we don’t know whether these technologies such as UV rays affect plant growth\, and most importantly\, nutrient quality\, compared to those sprayed with chemicals. Learn about the latest results of this research\, conducted at the Rodale Institute Pocono Organic Center in Pennsylvania. This project is supported in part by the N.E. SARE Partnership Grant. \n\n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Loyal to the Soil—The Role of Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Protecting the World’s Soil
DESCRIPTION:The world is losing topsoil at an alarming rate\, with estimates suggesting a loss of 24 billion tons of fertile soil annually. As soil degrades\, its ability to produce food diminishes. Around 52% of agricultural land is already moderately or severely affected by soil degradation\, and the cost to the global economy is staggering. It’s estimated that $400 billion per year is lost in agricultural productivity\, decreased crop resilience\, and increased need for fertilizers and soil amendments. \nFortunately\, there is a path forward that protects soil\, improves the nutrient density of food\, considers the welfare of farm animals\, and safeguards the health and well-being of farmworkers–certified regenerative organic agriculture. Join Rodale Institute Pocono Organics\, the ROC Certified Regional Resource Center in Rodale Institute’s nationwide network of farms\, and representatives of the Regenerative Organic Alliance on World Soil Day for a conversation among farmers and scientists in celebration of soil. This panel discussion\, entitled “Loyal to the Soil”\, will highlight Rodale Institute’s current soil research and the achievements and research of our partners at Pocono Organics. We will identify the dangers facing our top soil\, and discuss the promise of the work of farmers who utilize regenerative organic certified agriculture to protect our soil and positively impact human health. \n\n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Transforming Strawberry and Artichoke Systems: High-Residue Cover Cropping Innovations from the Specialty Crop Grant 2021
DESCRIPTION:Cover cropping systems hold significant promise for enhancing the sustainability of perennial vegetable production. This project explored the use of diverse cover crop species\, including sorghum\, clovers\, buckwheat\, and other species\, as part of an intercropping and high-residue system in strawberry and artichoke production. The study aimed to evaluate the long-term weed suppression potential of these cover crops while maintaining productivity in these perennial systems. By integrating high-residue cover crops\, the research investigated the dynamics of weed control over time\, soil health benefits\, and potential trade-offs with crop yields. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how diversified cover crop systems can support more sustainable\, resilient\, and economically viable approaches for specialty crop production. \n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Southeast Organic Buyer/Seller Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Organic Buyer/Seller Mixer and Farmer Champion Award Ceremony with Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture\nAt Georgia Organics’ SOWTH Conference\nTake part in this mixer focused on fostering relationships between farmers and organic buyers. Farmers and organic buyers will have the chance to connect through some facilitated conversations about organic markets opportunities\, particularly for organic vegetable and fruit markets. Refreshments and food will be provided. This event is especially designed for organic buyers\, organic farmers\, those transitioning\, and those who are curious about organic production. \nIn addition to networking\, Tyler Harper\, Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture will present the Farmer Champion awards for Higher Education and Early Care and Education. The Farmer Champion program works with The Common Market Southeast and Quality Care for Children to verify local food purchases for higher education institutions and early care and education centers\, respectively. Georgia Organics and the Common Market Southeast work together on expanding local food in higher education institutions through The ACRE Collective: Advancing Agriculture\, Community\, Resilience & Equity through Values-Based Procurement. The ACRE Collective centers on garnering food purchasing commitments from Atlanta-area anchor institutions\, while shifting procurement to producers that share these institutions’ values. Georgia Organics and Quality Care for Children have awarded approximately twenty early care and education centers across the state since expanding the Farmer Champion program in 2022. We are excited to honor four higher education institutions in the Atlanta-area and seven early care and education centers across Georgia that are committed to sourcing local food and working with growers across Georgia. \n\nLearn More About the Farmer Champion Program: The Farmer Champion Program at Georgia Organics was launched in 2019 and works to bring local farmers and the food service community together to increase sustainable and organic purchasing. This happens by connecting eaters to businesses that source responsibly\, so our local food system’s diverse patchwork of small and organic farms will grow and thrive. The Farmer Champion program helps to raise awareness about local sourcing by highlighting various members of the food service community who prioritize sourcing local food and relationships with Georgia’s vibrant community of food producers.  These relationships between farmers\, food producers\, and the food service community help to continue to grow and strengthen Georgia’s good resilient food system. \nPlease note: Although this event is associated with SOWTH\, you do not have to be an attendee of SOWTH to attend this event. However\, if you are planning on attending SOWTH\, you should definitely come and help us kick off a great regional conference! \nAgenda\n\n6-6:45pm – Arrival\, informal networking\, refreshments\n6:45-7:15pm – Welcome and Farmer Champion Award Ceremony with Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture\, Tayler Harper\n7:15-9pm – Facilitated networking\n\nDetails\nLocation: Wild Heaven Beer: West End Brewery & Gardens\n1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nDate: February 4\, 2025 \nTime: 6pm – 9pm EST \nRegistration\n\n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Address* \n \n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n Farm or Organization NameI am a...*\n \n \n Farmer/Producer\n \n \n \n Processor/Handler\n \n \n \n Buyer (ex. restaurant\, wholesale\, hospital\, institution\, etc)\n \n \n \n \n If you need an accessibility accommodation or have any other information you’d like us to know\, please provide it below:Photo Release*I hereby consent to the royalty-free use by the Organic Trade Association\, Rodale Institute\, and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of photograph(s) taken of me by employees/representatives of the USDA\, and of any reproduction of the photograph(s) in any form\, in any media\, for any purpose in connection with USDA\, world-wide\, free and clear of any claim whatsoever on my part.
