SUMMARY:Cancelled: Pastured Hogs Production
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, we have had to cancel the on-farm Pastured Hog workshop scheduled for October 7th. Some of the content of that class will be covered in the webinar scheduled for October 8th. There is no access fee\, and you can register here. \nIf you want to watch a video detailing our hog facility and operation\, with a presentation by our animal husbandry specialist\, you can find it as part of our 2020 Virtual Field Day.\nThere is a $25 fee to access the virtual event. \n• • • \nThis class is an opportunity for interested farmers to learn first-hand how to integrate a pastured hog operation into their farm. Focused on nutrition and forage management\, serious farmers will gain the knowledge they need to begin setting the foundations of a successful organic hog herd. \nA pasture-based production system is a very cost-effective method of meat production and is appealing to consumers who look for high quality meat from humanely treated animals. Grazing hogs on pasture not only benefits the animals but also improves the overall farm\, as hogs will clean up weather-damaged crops and weed species\, fertilize pastures/fields with manure\, and can even be used to “till up” underproductive areas. \nIf you are a veteran\, you may be eligible to attend educational events for free. Please email veterans@rodaleinstitute.org for details. \nOrganic Farmers Association members receive a 25% discount on all workshops. Email maria.pop@rodaleinstitute.org to claim your discount. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Past\, Present & Future of the Organic Movement\, featuring 2020 OPA Winners
DESCRIPTION:The Past\, Present and Future of the Organic Movement – a live webinar featuring Rodale Institute 2020 Organic Pioneer Award Winners Katherine DiMatteo\, Dr. Tyrone B. Hayes and Grant Lundberg\nWhen you donate any amount during Organic Pioneer Month\, you gain access to a live\, virtual panel discussion with 2020 Organic Pioneer Award Winners! Moderated by Rodale Institute CEO Jeff Moyer\, this webinar will cover the past\, present and future of the organic movement. \nWhether lobbying Capitol Hill for the development of the U.S. National Organic Program Standards\, shaking up the pesticide industry with paradigm-shifting research\, or building the foundation of organic and eco-farmed rice in the United States\, one word can be used to sum up this year’s Organic Pioneer Award winners: legacy.  Hear in their own words where the organic industry has been\, where it stands now\, and where it needs to go next in order to advance the organic movement. \nTo register\, donate any amount\, and we’ll send you instructions to access! \n\n \nOur Panelists \nTyrone B. Hayes\, Ph.D.\nDr. Tyrone B. Hayes received his Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1989 and his Ph.D. from the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California\, Berkeley in 1993. After completing his Ph.D.\, he was hired as an Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley in 1994\, promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2000\, and to full Professor in 2003. Hayes’ research focuses on developmental endocrinology with an emphasis on the role of endocrine-disrupting contaminants\, particularly pesticides. He is interested in the impact of chemical contaminants on environmental health and public health\, with specific attention to environmental justice and healthcare disparities. \nKatherine DiMatteo\nKatherine DiMatteo provides organizational management\, and policy and regulatory consulting services to the organic sector.. She recently served as interim executive director of Pennsylvania Certified Organic and was formerly the executive director of the Organic Trade Association from 1990 to 2006. Katherine was instrumental in shaping the outcome of the U.S. National Organic Program standards and the U.N. Codex Guidelines for organically produced foods. She currently serves on the Fairtrade America Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of Protect Our Breasts. Katherine was a founding member of the Climate Collaborative and now serves on its management board. Previously she served as the president of IFOAM-Organics International Board of Directors and was a founding member of The Organic Center’s Board of Directors. \nThe Lundberg Family\nLundberg Family Farms leads with a longer view of family\, food\, and organic farming. Albert\, Frances\, and their four sons—Eldon\, Wendell\, Harlan\, and Homer—saw how the Dust Bowl stripped the land of its topsoil in the 1930’s. When they moved to California\, they decided to work in partnership with nature\, becoming pioneers of organic farming. Since 1937\, the Lundbergs have been growing healthy\, great-tasting rice while tending to soil\, air\, water\, and wildlife as carefully as their crops. In addition to farming organically\, Lundberg Family Farms offsets its operations with 100% renewable energy\, is ENERGY STAR certified\, and maintains TRUE Zero Waste certification. It’s all part of Lundberg’s mission to nourish\, conserve\, and innovate for a healthier world.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Soil Health as Affected by Management on Row Crop\, Vegetable\, and Pastured Livestock Farms in PA
DESCRIPTION:Watch A Recording of This Webinar \nRodale Institute has teamed up with Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) for a citizen-science project to identify soil health benchmarks that will assist in designing proper management practices (e.g. tillage intensity\, nutrient inputs\, cover crops\, etc.) to maintain and improve soil health and the continued productivity of organic farms. This “Soil Health Benchmark Study” involves more than 60 row crop\, vegetable\, and pastured livestock farms across PA.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Starting a Summer Garden with Acadia Tucker
DESCRIPTION:Watch A Recording of This Webinar \nThe springtime rush is over\, but the growing season has only just begun. Join Southern Maine regenerative farmer\, victory garden expert\, and Rodale Institute Ambassador Acadia Tucker for a lesson on how to plant a garden for a rewarding harvest later this summer. Find out what crops you can plant right now from seeds\, transplants\, and cuttings. See how to take care of them once they’re in the ground\, and discover why a regenerative twist on victory gardens is more critical than ever. \nAll live webinar attendees will receive 20% off the retail price of two of Acadia Tucker’s books: Growing Good Food: A Citizen’s Guide to Climate Victory Gardening and Growing Perennial Foods. \n \nAbout Acadia Tucker:\n \nAcadia Tucker is a regenerative farmer\, climate activist\, and author. Her books are a call to action to citizen gardeners everywhere\, and lay the groundwork for planting an organic\, regenerative garden. For her\, this is gardening as if our future depends on it. \nBefore becoming an author\, Acadia started a four-season organic market garden in Washington State inspired by farming pioneers Eliot Coleman and Jean-Martin Fortier. While managing the farm\, Acadia grew 200 different food crops before heading back to school at the University of British Columbia to complete a Masters in Land and Water Systems. \nShe lives in Maine and New Hampshire with her farm dog\, Nimbus\, and grows hops to support locally sourced craft beer in New England\, when she isn’t raising perennials in her own backyard. She is the author of Growing Perennial Foods: A Field Guide to Raising Resilient Herbs\, Fruits\, & Vegetables and Growing Good Food: A Citizen’s Guide to Climate Victory Gardening. Her forthcoming book Tiny Victory Gardens: Growing Good Food Without A Yard is another addition to the Stone Pier Press citizen gardening series. \nCheck out more victory gardening resources from Stone Pier Press.
