SUMMARY:Webinar: How to Build Soil Organic Matter in Organic Grain Systems
DESCRIPTION:Join our Organic Consultants\, Catherine Peebles\, Léa Vereecke\, and Nic Podoll\, to learn about building soil organic matter in organic grain systems. Soil organic matter is a key indicator of soil health and is associated with water holding capacity\, aggregate stability\, nutrient availability\, and inherent soil fertility. Thus\, maintaining good levels of organic matter will help grow healthy crops. Our consultants will discuss how it is derived\, the balance between gains and losses\, and different management practices’ influence on soil organic matter. \n\n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Hemp Production in Regenerative Organic Agroecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Hemp\, with approximately 50\,000 declared uses\, has been grown in North America since the 17th century. Hemp is grown for a variety of purposes such as fiber production and paper industry\, cosmetics\, medicinal properties and in the creation of construction material. C. sativa\, with hundreds of phytocannabinoids\, terpenoids\, flavonoids and fatty acids\, is recognized as a plant with a rich chemical profile. \nFor more than 50 years\, hemp production was restricted in the United States until the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 directed the USDA to develop a regulatory framework for hemp production. Just in 2020\, over 520 licenses were issued in the state of Pennsylvania to establish over 3\,100 acres of hemp fields and greenhouses.  \n\n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Webinar: The ABCs of Augmentative Biological Control
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this webinar has been cancelled. \nWhen pest populations climb\, beneficial insects in the environment can have difficulty controlling the situation. They need backup and farmers often turn to augmentative biological control\, or biocontrol. Releasing mass-reared insects like ladybeetles\, minute pirate bug\, lacewings\, etc. is a great way to quickly tackle pest pressure but there are best management practices farmers should follow in order to increase their efficacy. This presentation will walk through how to choose a biocontrol and best practices for releasing them.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Growing Industrial Hemp as a Multipurpose Crop in Organic Cropping Systems
DESCRIPTION:Commercial hemp (Cannabis sativa) production ceased throughout the U.S. in the early 1940s due to its close relationship to the marijuana plant. Thus\, little to no research on industrial hemp has been conducted over the past eighty years in the U.S. At Rodale Institute\, we have been investigating hemp as a nitrogen moderator in the hemp-malt barley (Hordeum vulgare) cropping system. \nIn this webinar\, our research scientist\, Dr. Madhav Dhakal will discuss nitrogen management in rotational organic no-tillage and conventional tillage systems with a focus on cover crop utilization. Current research demonstrates the influence of winter cover crops [hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) + field pea (Pisum sativum)] on nitrogen use efficiency\, yield\, and quality of hemp fiber and malt barley under two tillage [conventional tillage (CT) vs. no-tillage (NT)] practices and four supplemental nitrogen rates (0\, 50\, 100\, and 150 kg N ha˗1) in hemp and barley cropping system. \nLearn more about Rodale Institute’s weed management program here. \n\n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Exploring the Link Between Soil and Human Health—Protein\, Protein Quality\, and the Nutraceutical Amino Acid Ergothioneine
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be a project update of a multidisciplinary project funded by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR). This project seeks to link soil and human health by investigating the relationship between agricultural practices\, soil microbiology\, and crop nutrient quality in grain crops\, specifically wheat and corn. This study is measuring plant available nitrogen and soil microbial structure along with concentrations of protein\, amino acids\, B vitamins\, and the nutraceutical amino acid ergothioneine in grain crops produced in long-term systems trials\, on working farms\, and in controlled field and laboratory studies. \nActive research on ergothioneine is finding that this amino acid has antioxidant properties and increasingly apparent human health benefits. It is only biosynthesized by fungi and fungi-like bacteria\, is present in many foods\, and plants obtain it through an unknown mechanism where it is transferred up the food chain to animals and humans. Thus\, there should be a clear link between soil microbiomes\, ergothioneine biosynthesis in the soil\, its concentration in plants\, and human health. \n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Replacing Plastic Mulch with Cover Crops in Organic Vegetable Production Systems for Economic Benefit\, Soil Health\, and Environmental Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Extensive use of plastic mulches in food production systems has created massive concerns about the long-term sustainability of using this input. It is critical to find more effective yet environmentally friendly alternatives for plastic mulches to facilitate weed management in organic and conventional production systems. This is a necessary step towards developing more sustainable production systems with a lesser environmental impact that helps to build soil health over time. \nDuring this webinar we’ll review preliminary results of the Specialty Crop Grant Project established in Camarillo CA where we assessed how replacing plastic mulches with cover crops and living mulches along with no-till and reduced till will affect artichokes and strawberries growth\, yield and quality (as a model crop but the results will be applicable to any other vegetable in the rotation)\, soil health\, irrigation water use efficiency\, weed suppression efficacy. \nLearn more about our California Organic Center here. \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute.
