SUMMARY:Webinar: Using UV Light to Manage Pests and Diseases in Organic Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar about the various ways that UV light can be used for pest and disease management in organic agriculture.\nThe first half of the webinar will feature a presentation\, “UV-C for Thrips Management” by a team of researchers from the Entomology Research Lab (ERL) at UVM. \nThe second half of the webinar will focus on the UV light research that Rodale Institute is conducting with powdery mildew disease in organic greenhouse lettuce production. Lettuce growers depend heavily on OMRI certified chemicals to spray against the pathogen that causes the disease. Other technologies may be potentially helpful to nip the disease early in the production system. However\, we don’t know whether these technologies such as UV rays affect plant growth\, and most importantly\, nutrient quality\, compared to those sprayed with chemicals. Learn about the latest results of this research\, conducted at the Rodale Institute Pocono Organic Center in Pennsylvania. This project is supported in part by the N.E. SARE Partnership Grant. \n\n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Loyal to the Soil—The Role of Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Protecting the World’s Soil
DESCRIPTION:The world is losing topsoil at an alarming rate\, with estimates suggesting a loss of 24 billion tons of fertile soil annually. As soil degrades\, its ability to produce food diminishes. Around 52% of agricultural land is already moderately or severely affected by soil degradation\, and the cost to the global economy is staggering. It’s estimated that $400 billion per year is lost in agricultural productivity\, decreased crop resilience\, and increased need for fertilizers and soil amendments. \nFortunately\, there is a path forward that protects soil\, improves the nutrient density of food\, considers the welfare of farm animals\, and safeguards the health and well-being of farmworkers–certified regenerative organic agriculture. Join Rodale Institute Pocono Organics\, the ROC Certified Regional Resource Center in Rodale Institute’s nationwide network of farms\, and representatives of the Regenerative Organic Alliance on World Soil Day for a conversation among farmers and scientists in celebration of soil. This panel discussion\, entitled “Loyal to the Soil”\, will highlight Rodale Institute’s current soil research and the achievements and research of our partners at Pocono Organics. We will identify the dangers facing our top soil\, and discuss the promise of the work of farmers who utilize regenerative organic certified agriculture to protect our soil and positively impact human health. \n\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Transforming Strawberry and Artichoke Systems: High-Residue Cover Cropping Innovations from the Specialty Crop Grant 2021
DESCRIPTION:Cover cropping systems hold significant promise for enhancing the sustainability of perennial vegetable production. This project explored the use of diverse cover crop species\, including sorghum\, clovers\, buckwheat\, and other species\, as part of an intercropping and high-residue system in strawberry and artichoke production. The study aimed to evaluate the long-term weed suppression potential of these cover crops while maintaining productivity in these perennial systems. By integrating high-residue cover crops\, the research investigated the dynamics of weed control over time\, soil health benefits\, and potential trade-offs with crop yields. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how diversified cover crop systems can support more sustainable\, resilient\, and economically viable approaches for specialty crop production. \n\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Markets ROI of Organic Transition for Dairy Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Are you considering the transition to organic farming for your dairy farm and or interested in improving the return on investment for your organic farm through markets? Join us for an insightful virtual webinar designed to help you understand the economic potential of organic markets and equip you with the tools to evaluate your own transition. Attendees will get an overview of the organic market landscape and its growth potential from economic experts and learn from farmers like Wilson Organic Farms and the Painterland Sisters who successfully transitioned to organic dairy production. \nAll sessions are free of charge to attendees. \nPanelists\nPanelist: Chris Wilson\nChris Wilson is a seventh-generation farmer at Wilson Organic Farms in Cuba City\, Wisconsin\, where he and his family have been farming organically since 1996. With decades of experience in organic dairy and diversified cropping systems\, Chris’s family has been at the forefront of integrating organic no-till\, rotational grazing\, and cover cropping to build resilient farm ecosystems. Beyond the farm\, Chris serves on the Meat Executive Committee for CROPP Cooperative (Organic Valley) and actively collaborates with research institutions to advance regenerative agricultural solutions. His work bridges practical on-farm management with broader industry efforts to improve soil health\, nutrient efficiency\, and livestock integration within organic systems.\n \n \nPanelist: Painterland Sisters \nSisters Stephanie and Hayley Painter\, Founders and co-CEOs of Painterland Sisters\, grew up on their family’s fourth-generation regenerative organic dairy farm in Northern Pennsylvania. Using milk from their own farm and neighboring family farms\, they’re on a mission to sustain family farms\, champion nutrient-dense foods\, and educate consumers on the importance of sustainable farming—while connecting them directly to the source: the American Farmer. \nSince launching in 2022\, they were named Forbes 30 Under 30 in Food & Drink\, honored on the Congress Floor\, won a Nexty Award for their 24 oz Plain yogurt\, and spoke at over 60 events\, proudly representing Pennsylvania agriculture and amplifying the voices of farmers worldwide.\n \n \nModerator: Taylor Ussery \nTaylor Ussery helped run a small producer-processor dairy in central North Carolina for over seven years. During this time\, she created new gelato and soft serve product lines that were sold into direct-to-consumer\, retail\, and foodservice markets. She now works for a national foodservice distribution company where she helps farmers and artisans understand and access larger institutional markets. Taylor still engages her passion for dairy by sourcing local milk for her soft serve ice cream catering company and eating copious amounts of local cheese and fluid whole milk.\n \n \n  \n\nRegistration\n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. DESCRIPTION:During this webinar led by our Farm Innovations team\, we will focus on designing\, installing\, and using a variety of styles of portable and semi portable electric fences.\nWe will begin by looking at maps as a tool for planning your fence outline. We will then look at the variety of fences available to suit the needs of your operation. We will cover poultry netting\, 4-5 strand fencing for goats and sheep\, 1-2 strand fencing suitable for larger animals\, perimeter fencing\, subdividing paddocks within your field\, 3-D anti deer fencing\, grounding\, and energizers. We will discuss how to move livestock within fencing and some of the successes and failures we have had here at the Midwest Organic Center as well as in my past career working on a diverse organic farm in Northern California. Finally\, we will examine the age-old adage “the best fence is a good pasture.” \nRegistration\n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Advancing Sustainable Hemp Fiber Production and Processing in the Northeastern U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Rodale Institute has been at the forefront of industrial hemp research\, developing the best management practices to support farmers and fiber-processing industries across Pennsylvania and the Northeastern region since 2017.\nOur field and greenhouse trials focus on nutrient management\, varietal performance\, and key agronomic practices\, including row spacing and the use of cover crops to suppress weeds and improve soil health. We have evaluated many fiber hemp varieties with a special focus on their adaptability to organic systems. \nIn addition to agronomic performance\, we have studied how these varieties interact with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)\, beneficial microbes that enhance nutrient uptake and contribute to overall plant resilience. We have also begun testing the mechanical properties of fiber samples\, including tensile strength\, to better understand their industrial potential. \nWe look forward to sharing these findings to empower more growers and processors with practical\, science-based solutions\, in building a sustainable hemp fiber economy in the Northeast. Gain insights from our presenter\, Dr. Dinesh Panday in this webinar on September 3\, 2025. \nRegistration\n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Finding Edible Options for Cover Crops in California Organic Vegetable Rotations
DESCRIPTION:In California (in addition to many other parts of the country) high costs associated with farming can dissuade organic growers from incorporating cover crops and reduced tillage practices to their operation. Since 2024 the team at the Rodale Institute California Organic Center has been exploring how cover crops that can be harvested may offset some of the costs while improving the conditions of the soil and pressure from weeds. \nRegistration\n\n \n InstagramThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Midwest Vegetable Systems Trial—Utilizing No-Till and Biochar to Improve Sustainability of Organic Vegetable Production
DESCRIPTION:A common practice for vegetable production is the use of black plastic mulch (BPM). BPM has its benefits\, but it also is expensive and creates a large amount of waste\, some of which ends up as microplastics in the soil. By using no-till management and deep mulch\, vegetable producers can reduce these expenses and plastic waste while also providing benefits to soil health. This webinar will discuss the Midwest Vegetables Systems Trial which combines different tillage management systems with the use of biochar as a soil amendment. Join us to learn more about biochar\, organic vegetable production in the Midwest\, and the various tillage management practices that can benefit soil health and reduce the labor needed for weeding. \nRegistration\n\n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute.
