SUMMARY:Webinar: Maximize Tine Weeder Performance: Strategies\, Resources\, and Model Selection
DESCRIPTION:Tine weeding is one of the most effective methods of “blind cultivation” on organic farms. However\, tine weeder performance varies dramatically with different models\, settings/adjustments\, and timing. In this webinar\, Rodale Institute crop consultants and guests will compare tine weeding models and discuss tine weeding strategies to improve early season weed control for corn and soybeans. The webinar will cover newly available models and commonly available used options\, as well as resources for farmers to improve decision making about timing and aggressiveness of tine weeding passes. \n\n \n PhoneThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Climate-Smart Project Update
DESCRIPTION:This webinar aims to educate participants about the Southern Piedmont Climate-Smart Project. This project is growing regenerative agriculture in the southeast. This $25 million project has over $6 million in cash and non-cash incentives for organic and conventional farmers\, farmers markets\, and market producers participating in the project and located in the Southern Piedmont. Working throughout the Southeastern U.S.\, we’re partnering with vegetable farmers to adopt farming methods that support the local ecosystem. We’re also helping farmers markets promote the climate-smart crops grown in the study. \nAt this state in the project\, we are still in the process of recruiting conventional and naturally grown/organic farmers. If you can’t participate or aren’t in the Piedmont\, but you know someone who is\, please reach out to project lead\, Dr. Kristie Wendelberger (kristie.wendelberger@rodaleinstitute.org) \n\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Ancient Wheat: The Old Grain with Prospects
DESCRIPTION:Today’s bread is dominated by modern bread wheat that was developed during the “Green Revolution” of the mid-20th century. Ancient wheat may not be mainstream to feed billions of people in 2050\, but ancient varieties have some nutritional advantages. In addition\, unlike modern wheat\, plant growth and biomass can be valuable agronomic characteristics to use when thinking of reduced tillage. Join Dr. Zinati in this webinar to discuss the differences between wheat varieties and nutritional variation among modern\, heritage\, and ancient wheat. This project is supported in part by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR). \n\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Crop Diversification in the Midwest Improves Soil Health and Farm Profitability
DESCRIPTION:Corn and soybeans are the primary cash crops in the Midwest but this hasn’t always been the case. Millions of acres of small grains were a common sight in the mid-1900’s but this has changed dramatically\, and not for the better. In this webinar\, we will examine how the conventional corn-soybean rotation is detrimental to soil health and limits the farm’s profitability. We will also discuss the Midwest Organic Center’s on-going study that demonstrates the benefits of diversifying crop rotations by integrating small grains\, pulses\, oilseeds\, and livestock\, thus improving the health and sustainability of the farm’s soil and budget. \n\n \n LinkedInThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Using UV Light to Manage Pests and Diseases in Organic Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar about the various ways that UV light can be used for pest and disease management in organic agriculture.\nThe first half of the webinar will feature a presentation\, “UV-C for Thrips Management” by a team of researchers from the Entomology Research Lab (ERL) at UVM. \nThe second half of the webinar will focus on the UV light research that Rodale Institute is conducting with powdery mildew disease in organic greenhouse lettuce production. Lettuce growers depend heavily on OMRI certified chemicals to spray against the pathogen that causes the disease. Other technologies may be potentially helpful to nip the disease early in the production system. However\, we don’t know whether these technologies such as UV rays affect plant growth\, and most importantly\, nutrient quality\, compared to those sprayed with chemicals. Learn about the latest results of this research\, conducted at the Rodale Institute Pocono Organic Center in Pennsylvania. This project is supported in part by the N.E. SARE Partnership Grant. \n\n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute. SUMMARY:Webinar: Loyal to the Soil—The Role of Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Protecting the World’s Soil
DESCRIPTION:The world is losing topsoil at an alarming rate\, with estimates suggesting a loss of 24 billion tons of fertile soil annually. As soil degrades\, its ability to produce food diminishes. Around 52% of agricultural land is already moderately or severely affected by soil degradation\, and the cost to the global economy is staggering. It’s estimated that $400 billion per year is lost in agricultural productivity\, decreased crop resilience\, and increased need for fertilizers and soil amendments. \nFortunately\, there is a path forward that protects soil\, improves the nutrient density of food\, considers the welfare of farm animals\, and safeguards the health and well-being of farmworkers–certified regenerative organic agriculture. Join Rodale Institute Pocono Organics\, the ROC Certified Regional Resource Center in Rodale Institute’s nationwide network of farms\, and representatives of the Regenerative Organic Alliance on World Soil Day for a conversation among farmers and scientists in celebration of soil. This panel discussion\, entitled “Loyal to the Soil”\, will highlight Rodale Institute’s current soil research and the achievements and research of our partners at Pocono Organics. SUMMARY:Webinar: Transforming Strawberry and Artichoke Systems: High-Residue Cover Cropping Innovations from the Specialty Crop Grant 2021
DESCRIPTION:Cover cropping systems hold significant promise for enhancing the sustainability of perennial vegetable production. This project explored the use of diverse cover crop species\, including sorghum\, clovers\, buckwheat\, and other species\, as part of an intercropping and high-residue system in strawberry and artichoke production. The study aimed to evaluate the long-term weed suppression potential of these cover crops while maintaining productivity in these perennial systems. By integrating high-residue cover crops\, the research investigated the dynamics of weed control over time\, soil health benefits\, and potential trade-offs with crop yields. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how diversified cover crop systems can support more sustainable\, resilient\, and economically viable approaches for specialty crop production. \n\n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Zip/Postal Code*\n Register \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCompleting this form automatically signs you up for electronic communications from Rodale Institute.
