Study confirms organic nitrogen more eco-friendly
Scientific research continues to bear out that organic agriculture is better for people and the planet.
A graduate student at Stanford University and her colleagues published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that showed that when organic apple trees were fertilized with synthetic chemicals, the result was more damaging to the environment than when the trees were fertilized organically.
The study found that the intensive use of chemicals, including synthetic fertilizer, over the past 60 years “have resulted in substantial nitrogen pollution and ecological damage” and that organic farming is not only more environmentally friendly but potentially more profitable.
