Some 3,000 maquiladora factories, where multinational corporations can take advantage of low wages ($1 an hour) and lax environmental laws, line the US/Mexican border. Mexicans working here say they would rather do this work than agricultural work, which pays half or less of maquiladora wages, even when it means living in a slum.
