Minnesota organic farmer innovates to fight climate change

Pioneer organic farmer Carmen Fernholz is featured as the innovative carbon-sequestering thinker in an examination of how Minnesota farmers are reacting to policy that makes carbon a way to deal with climate change. Some resist the notion, while Fernholz wants to expand his current practices of planting perennial crops and extra cover crops.

Fernholz has been featured in many Rodale Institute farmer-focused publications, and was honored as the “Organic Farmer of the Year” in 2005 by the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES).

He is looking new ways, beyond his radish cover crop to add carbon overwinter, and his other current organic farming practices to cut his agricultural carbon footprint.
