Pigs to people ratio correlation examined in Canadian H1N1 study
New data from British Columbia show that there may be parallels between regional pig population and the number of confirmed swine flu diagnoses in that area. Statistics Canada has found that the H1N1 virus is more severe and more likely to appear in locations engaged in “large-scale hog production” than in other regions. Experts found at least a 99 percent locational correlation between hog density and the number of flu cases reported in all provinces.
“If the correlations are correct, the whole issue of factory farming has to be looked at,” said Peter Fricker, projects and communications director for the Vancouver Humane Society.
