ARS names biological practices to improve potato sustainability
The Agricultural Research Service has found that crop rotation and cover crops could be keys in preventing disease, enhancing the soil quality, and boosting productivity of potato crops. In addition, ARS researchers on the west coast found that crushed mustard seed meal spread over the potato fields greatly reduced the amount of weeds.
The study, which began in 1997, is part of a continuing ARS effort to identify routes to a more sustainable agriculture.
