Former Iowa state representative advocates using the White House lawn to sow a “new food culture”
Ed Fallon, former state Representative of Iowa, sent a letter to Obama applying for the position of “White House farmer.” Coined by Michael Pollan in his New York Times article “Farmer in Chief,” the phrase connotes the need for Washington to lead by example and to revive the victory garden movement originally spread by Eleanor Roosevelt during World War II. Fallon, in the letter that included his suggestions and credentials, argued that by managing a small organic farm on five acres of the south-facing White House lawn, he could promote greater food security and renew national interest in home-grown, organic food.
