Urban farmer spawns a growing movement in Milwaukee

Will Allen, founder of Growing Power, a community-based organization and urban farm in Milwaukee, made his vision a reality by working to improve the local food supply, reducing energy use, and educating citizens of Milwaukee and Chicago about grassroots agriculture. He grows $500,000 worth of produce annually in greenhouses and hoophouses, and supplies not only restaurants and retailers, but residents of the inner-city "food desert" with affordable, healthy food. His work earned him a $500,000 MacArthur "genius grant," with which he plans to make elaborate, but sustainable, expansions. Full Story: The New York Times
