Carbon credit mechanisms called into question

A BBC World Service investigation has uncovered serious flaws in the carbon credit market. Carbon credits were introduced in the Kyoto protocol to encourage developed nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. A project can receive credits if it “will lead to cuts in greenhouse gas emissions” that are greater than could have been achieved without the credits. The investigation found that several projects that have been given credits would have been completed whether or not they received credits.
